The Tribe Builder's Manifesto: Spark a Movement. Change the World.

34 Years in the making.

It’s never too late to discover what you were born to do.

For me, this manifesto is the result of that discovery in my life.  It is not the end, but it is a beautiful beginning that I am excited to share with you.  The words inside are few, but they are deeply meaningful because they describe a piece of my own journey.

“Jason, that is awesome! I love the simplicity and clarity of the message. Lot’s of great stuff in there.  Great Manifesto!”

I love that you quoted Dr. Seuss. And I love the new site design. Quite awesome.

As I read four common obstacles you quoted I went,’Let’s see: noise (yep), distraction (uh-huh), disbelief (yeah), and lack of confidence (yep).” Wow, is Jason watching me?

As I was telling you this morning, you have inspired me as a writer to keep plowing along and to not give up. I don’t have any big stories to tell, but I know several people who have been touched by my writings. Okay, so I could probably count them all on one hand :-D

But like you said, there’s a ripple effect. You’ve inspired me to keep going, I’ve inspired others to keep going, and those others inspire others.

    Thank you.

    Thanks Jeremy!

Yes, as I mentioned to you before, I see myself a lot in you. It doesn’t surprise me that you resonate with the things that have always stopped me.

Here’s to further inspiration from us both and ripples that will change the world!

    Jason,
You may start a revolution with this Manifesto! I’m pos that there are so many others, like me, that have the passion and desire to change the world or make a difference…if even only in our own lives (at least to start with). And yes, so many of us are (literally) crippled by fear!! Now, my Dave has been an incedible support system for me, but it was because of a conversation between you and I that I now feel like I really have solid ideas for a place to start on my blog. Your ideas are wonderful! Thanks so much!! Go get ‘em J-man!

Thanks Sally. Those conversations are where I come alive. I’m so excited that you feel refreshed with some new perspective. Love to see a great ripple effect come together… :) Let us know how we can continue to support you, and don’t forget to post a link here once your blog is up so we can all check it out. Love the concept.

Great advice Jason! Your statement made me laugh when you said you must use your voice even if it’s shaking. I was certainly shaking as I was the first one in my community at the meeting last night to stand up for what was important to me – uncontaminated water in my well and yard.

Congrats on standing up and using that voice! It’s powerful, and sometimes even more authentic when it shakes… :) That’s the type of movements of positive change that will come out of the spark. Thanks for sharing this Jenni!

    Jason:
I really liked, “If there is no resistance, you’re going the wrong way.” Runners like to say, “If you can’t feel the wind its behind you.” The idea being that if it is too easy, not only is there is a factor in the equation that you’re not taking into account, it might be the wrong equation. Keep up the good work!!
    Best regards,
    Dave

    Hi there Jason.
I came across your site and manifesto through the ESC the City e-letter. I’m very happy that I clicked on the link. Loved the manifesto and reading your thoughts on how as people we should rise up and really create change and not drift through life. I’m coming towards the end of a Masters in Theatre and I’m preparing to go out into my community (Dublin,Ireland) to try and create inspiring work that will change people. Glad to know there are others out there who think like this too.
    Keep up the great work,

Great motivating and inspirational read…imagine if we all followed it…just have to see that obstacles are fun challenges…we all have moments of doubt, lack of confidence…just get up in the morning, splash your face w cold water and, like in the movie, say out loud, “It’s showtime folks” and go spread your enthusiasm…eventually the drones get it.

Love your enthusiasm Rosie! Life can seemingly throw wrenches and obstacles into our path sometimes, but when you have a positive outlook on the experience like you mentioned, then you are able to see some of the greatest opportunities for impact and growth. Jason,

This is a great way to bring like minded people together (people who want to change the world).

I believe that if you add a forum to this site, then the people who you bring together will begin to organize and develop their ideas and themselves.

I am exploring community and TRIBE options for one of my client projects now, and so I’d love to carry over those findings and platforms and explore the idea of forum integration and community building here. Great suggestions! Looking forward to the evolution of the TRIBE here.

    Aloha Jason,

Your Tribe Builder Manifesto was truly inspiring for me. I am currently building up my Tribe, Hui Kulia at my website. I believe by building a Ku body spiritually, mentally, and physically one can live a meaningful and fulfilling life. I share the lessons from my Native Hawaiian culture I learned from my kupuna (elders), ancestors, and life experience. My vision is if everyone exercised and shared the spirit of Aloha, the world would be a better place to live. But before you make an impact on the world, it all starts with YOU.

Mahalo for creating such an awesome site and looking forward to hopefully working with you one day.

    Aloha!

I really enjoyed your eBook. One thing that I find as I stand on the edge of my personal Grand Canyon is that are ? I have put a list together identifying a bunch of things that I love to do and a bunch of things that I hate to do, but how do I turn that into an idea? Any examples would be appreciated.

    • Jason
      October 3, 2012 | 5:13 pm

Jeff, great question! The answer probably lies somewhere at the intersection of your story and a need in the world that only you can step up to meet. Chris Guillebeau talks a bit about these intersections in his book The $100 Startup. My friend Emilie Wapnick talks about this intersection as an overarching theme that can bring your interests together and connect with a demand in the marketplace at her site puttylike.com. Take a look at a recent post on “How To Create Your Own Niche” where I interview the Tattoed Bride Guy about how he formed his niche. He’s standing by for questions and I think yours would be great to present to Mike to gain some additional perspective!

Also, feel free to reply back with more details about your interests and what you are thinking about and I’ll help in any way I can!

    Hey Jason,

This is great stuff. I really enjoy the site and the book. I feel as if at a fork in the road in my career and so this site and book has been very timely for me.

I guess, I am just trying to figure out a starting point of what next adventure to dive head first into…but I guess that would have to start with a question within myself.

So really just looking for clarity on where to head.

    Thanks again for the tribe.ly!

Hi, Jason, I loved reading your story. It was so genuine and covered some of the curve balls of entrepreneurship, which you typically don’t hear.

My story is that I left my “stable” government job to work for someone else, but I’d be working from home. Perfect…so I thought. When that job phased out due to the real estate market crashing, I was out of work so I decided to make a living on my own.

    So far, I’ve failed miserably.

I decided to start a concierge business for senior citizens. I’d help with grocery shopping, genteel companionship, light housework, etc. I loved doing that, and had a few clients that appreciated how I helped them.

Their sincere praise and smiles meant more to me than any paycheck that I’ve ever received.

However, marketing is not my strong point and I’m terrible at getting the word out about my business.

I’ve also tried my hand at direct selling (candles), but I had to spend more money that I didn’t have.

In the meantime, because I’m a one-man operation making well below poverty level at the moment, I’ve lost my pension and other savings, I had to go bankrupt last year and I’ll be foreclosing on my condo this year.

Sometimes I literally don’t have any money to eat and I cry myself to sleep, hungry. I can’t even afford a cheap haircut right now. It’s so sad.

I constantly ask myself, “Is this really worth it?” Maybe I should just become part of the cubicle nation again, pushing papers and be done with it. I never thought I’d be in this position at age 46, but here I am.

I’ve always been a responsible adult, always paid my bills on time, never missed a payment, always had it together…

…but I was unhappy because I felt stagnant. I was never going anywhere in my job as an assistant.

Suicide has crossed my mind several times because my life right now is just a mess. Everyone around me keeps telling me to “just get a job.” So I am working part-time right now to pay my current bills, leaving my afternoons open to create my own work.

I don’t want to give up! I can’t just throw in the towel now, not after going through the pain and embarrassment that I’m still experiencing.

I’m losing everything…but I still have a spark inside of me that whispers, “There has to be another way. Don’t give up yet. You have so much to offer.”

I take a 5-mile walk almost every evening, thinking about my life. What I’ve done, how I’ve helped people, where I’m going, what I should be doing with my life. When I get home from my walk, I feel a sense of hope.

So, thank you for sharing your story and creating Tribe.ly. I’ve never made 6-figures like you, but I’m slowly losing things that I care about and it hurts deeply. I’ve learned a lot over the past few years.

I understand what it means to feel afraid…alone…hopeless.

This was my choice, nobody forced me to take the steps that I’ve taken and I take full responsibility.

Do I have any regrets? “No.”

Even though I’m losing everything? “No.”

Would I do it again? “In a heartbeat.”

I have to believe that things will work out eventually. They just have to with determination and persistence.

I want to work and help other people, but I want to do it on my own. I want to be in control of how much I earn and how I’ll be helping other people.

I hope to get a copy of your Builder’s Manifesto as an inspiration to keep my going. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

    Sincerely,
    Steve

    Sincerely,
    Steve
